Chapter 345: The Time Tower’s Second Challenge [1]
Chapter 345: The Time Tower’s Second Challenge [1]
Leon dashed forward without any hesitation, crossing the gap from the island where he was standing into the one after that, then into another, his feet barely touching the ground before he launched himself again.
The islands varied from size, but they were all enough to hold at least four humanoid figures each.
He had already aimed for the [Clock Speedster] he wanted to get first based on its position, so all he needed to do was focus on reaching it before it could react and escape.
After around fifteen seconds of rapid island hopping, he reached the island where the monster was standing and extended his arm to grab the flag.
But right as Leon extended his arm and his fingers were about to close around the flag’s pole, something very much expected happened.
Fwoosh!
In a single instant, the small clock monster holding the flag on its back blitzed away to another island far across the void.
"What?" Leon let out, completely stunned by what had just occurred.
It wasnt the fact the monster escaped that shocked Leon, but more so that it was so incredibly fast that he wasn’t even able to register what had happened until he looked at the monster now standing on another island, taunting him with its presence.
One instant the flag’s pole was right in front of his face, and the next instant it wasn’t there at all, as if it had never existed.
"Kikiki" it laughed at him, pointing one of its mechanical hands directly at him in a mocking gesture.
’...Their entire [Combat Power] must be focused entirely on Agility,’ Leon thought to himself, analyzing the situation, ’Catching them normally is... practically impossible for anyone without insane speed.’
Even a level 100 player wouldn’t be able to even comprehend what was happening when these things moved, because they were simply too fast to track with normal eyes.
But while many players would try again and again to see if they could perhaps get lucky and grab one, Leon stopped and thought about a different approach.
’I need a proper plan to get them, brute force isn’t going to work here,’ he realized.
If speed wasn’t the answer to catching these things, then the only other viable option was to corner them before they could escape.
Cataclysmic Fireball!
He lifted his staff and began to charge his fireball, launching it toward an island where one of the clock speedsters was standing to see how it would react.
But of course, the monster moved out of the way at the very last second, as if taunting Leon and showing off its incredible speed.
BOOM!
The fireball hit the island and shattered it completely into tiny pieces that fell into the void below.
Seeing that reaction, Leon’s eyes twitched, and a wide smile appeared on his face as a new idea formed in his mind, ’Alright, I got it now.’
Trying to use any of his skills or spells directly against these things was absolutely useless, because even though these things’ constitution was probably at 0, they were still too fast for any direct attack to land.
They could probably blitz between Leon’s [Eclipse Dance] slashes while still having enough leeway to mock him afterward.
By himself, Leon wouldn’t be able to do much against them, and even more so knowing he needed to get ten of these flags to complete the challenge.
But perhaps there was another way that didn’t involve him chasing them directly.
Undead Summoning!
Leon lifted his staff high into the air, and from the ground of the island before him, his skeletons began to rise from the earth.
He summoned 15 [Undead Mages] and 10 [Undead Skeletons], the green light in their eyes flickering to life.
Then he pointed forward and gave his orders to his undead army, explaining the plan in detail.
"Follow me, skeletons, while the mages shoot fireballs to destroy islands from afar and cut off their escape routes," Leon commanded.
He explained a bit more about the strategy, while the clock speedsters were gazing at him with what seemed like curiosity, and then, he turned around with a wide smile on his face.
"Alright, its time to put this plan into action."
Fwoosh!
Leon and his ten skeleton warriors rushed forward one after the other, crossing several islands in quick succession to reach their target.
Eventually he arrived on a pretty big island with a [Clock Speedster] on the other side, and the monster was making weird dance moves to mock Leon’s attempts to catch it.
His skeletons arrived as well, surrounding the speedster on separate islands to cut off its escape routes.
But as they all rushed forward toward the monster to try and corner it, something happened.
Blitz!
The monster disappeared from the spot instantly, ready to land on another island close to where they were positioned.
And that was when Leon realized that he had finally figured out the way to win this challenge.
Because the exact moment the clock speedster landed on the new island, it didn’t notice that at the same time, the [Undead Mages] had charged their fireballs and launched them toward key positions.
They launched them toward many islands near the clock speedster Leon was aiming for, destroying them before it could use them to escape.
Boom! Boom!
And immediately, several islands near the monster broke apart into rubble, including the one it was about to land on at that very moment.
The monster used its incredible speed to jump upward into the air to avoid falling, but without any other landing spot nearby, it stood frozen in place.
It didn’t have the ability to move around in midair without momentum to push off from after all, so it was completely vulnerable.
And seeing that golden opportunity, Leon pointed forward at the helpless monster.
"Bring me that flag right now," he ordered, and all his skeletons rushed forward, jumping toward the monster in a coordinated attack.
Even if they fell into the void below, it didn’t really matter because he could simply unsummon them and bring them back later.
But as the ten skeletons jumped to grab the flag, something that Leon didn’t expect happened.
And this time, it was actually something surprising.
SMASH!
With a single powerful kick, the clock speedster smashed its metallic leg into one of the skeletons, shattering its skull and the upper half of its body completely into pieces.
"What?" Leon said, his eyes widening in shock at the sudden display of power.
Then as the nine other skeletons closed the distance to try and grab the monster, it began to charge something up, and released a massive shockwave that killed the rest of them instantly.
Ding!
[10 of your "Undead Skeletons" have been killed.]
The clock speedster used one of the skeletons’ falling bodies to propel itself to another island, landing safely and escaping the trap.
"KIKIKIKI"
It laughed once more while dancing, and the other monsters did as well, waving the flag.
Seeing this unexpected development, Leon’s entire face darkened, his eyes glowing with frustration.
’They’re smart.’
Then the clock speedster roared while shouting and pointed at the initial island where Leon’s [Undead Mages] were still standing.
"KRIIIIIII"
In an instant, two of the things rushed at that island and killed every single undead mage before they could do anything to defend themselves.
Leon laughed at the sight, a bitter chuckle escaping his lips, "Of course it wasn’t going to be that easy!"
The [Time Overseer] said he’d adjusted the difficulty based on what he saw Leon do.
Knowing that, Leon felt like it would have been better to simply act like he was about to be defeated by the boss in the previous gate.
The details of the clock speedsters status panel had said that they were harmless, but that clearly didn’t mean they were weak in any way.
They were level 100 monsters after all, more than enough to destroy Leon’s skeletons with one slight movement or attack.
"I see now, this is going to be much harder than I thought," Leon admitted to himself.
Afterward, Leon tried to repeatedly corner the clock speedsters one way or another, using his skeletons in different manners or using his skills to try and trap them.
He even tried to make one of them fall to the void like he did the first time, instead sending no skeletons toward it so it had nothing to propel itself from and would fall helplessly.
But another clock speedster simply helped its companion by colliding into it midair, saving it from falling.
These things worked extremely well together as a team, but that mainly meant that the more of them Leon actually managed to kill, the more straightforward this challenge would become over time.
And at that moment, a notification appeared before him that reminded him of the time limit.
Ding!
[Only 6 hours remain.]
[Current Flags Caught: 0/10]
[You should hurry up, Celestial!]
"Yeah yeah, I know," Leon sighed heavily, "I guess I need to find another way to deal with these things... perhaps a more violent one."
